MANAGEMENT AND COUNSELLING FOR GENETIC EYE DISEASES

Genetic factors play a role in many kinds of eye disease, including those diseases that are the leading cause of blindness among infants, children and adults.

More than 60 percent of cases of blindness among infants are caused by inherited eye diseases such as congenital (present at birth) cataracts, congenital glaucoma, retinal degeneration, optic atrophy and eye malformations. 

In a child with a Genetic Eye disease, we perform a complete review of any medical records or test results available and discuss your personal and family medical history, with particular attention given to signs and symptoms of genetic disorders in detail. We do pedigree charting (draw the family tree) and identify other family members who may be affected with similar problems. We screen the family members and siblings and do a detailed eye examination for them. This helps us in formulating the diagnosis and treatment plan.
